PROJECT BLACK SPOT

MC SHARON & THE GREENHOUSE MOVEMENT

Project Black Spot is a cross-disciplinary initiative spearheaded by Sharon Achieng Alai — known as MC Sharon — and supported by The Greenhouse Movement. As an artist in Kenya, Sharon is confounded by how the status quo has managed to stifle dissenting artistic voices. One of the most significant concerns is the eradication of art spaces where artists would meet, exchange ideas, share creativity, and break bread.

In Project Black Spot, MC Sharon and her team come together to create a three-song EP and a canvas art piece. The project confronts the need for community in times of uncertainty; the need for artists to be confident in their ideals; and the importance of including day-to-day people in artistic journeys

“Art is for the people anyway.”

Humanizing the artist is important for relatability and for effectiveness in teaching the masses. The sonic work — a gritty blend of hip-hop, melodic Afro-fusion, and ethnomusicology — sits alongside an acrylic-on-canvas exploration of womanhood and girl power. Together they form a unified statement: artistic confidence as community resilience; the reclamation of creative space as an act of citizenship.

The Greenhouse Movement, a collective of multi-hyphenate artists managed by MC Sharon for six years, underpins the project — operating under the principle of changing the world one song and one plant at a time

ABOUT THE ARTIST

MC SHARON

Sharon Achieng Alai — Nairobi, Kenya

Sharon Achieng Alai, widely recognised as MC Sharon, is a formidable force in the contemporary creative landscape of Nairobi, Kenya. A true polymath, she operates at the intersection of genre-bending liberation through music, scholarship, interdisciplinary artistry, and spiritual depth. Her identity is layered with powerful monikers — from Decibelle, the Goddess of Sound, to Achieng Ajuoga, the Oracle of Muhoroni Town.

As a rap crooner and producer, Alai’s musical architecture is a gritty, unapologetic blend of hip-hop, melodic Afro-fusion, and ethnomusicology. Her work is intentionally genre-bending, utilizing modern DAWs to craft soundscapes that house intense lyricism and spoken word. Through her music, she serves as a thematic storyteller, navigating from biting political commentary to the ethereal and whimsical.

Beyond the auditory realm, Alai is an accomplished published author and contemporary painter. Utilizing acrylics and oils, she translates the nuances of day-to-day life onto canvas. At the heart of her community impact is the Green House Movement — a collective she has managed for six years under the guiding principle of changing the world one song and one plant at a time
