GRAFFITI ART & POETRY IN HARARE

MEMORY CHIRERE
In Graffiti Art & Poetry in Harare, Memory Chirere sets out to show how graffiti is used to intervene in urban spaces, often expressing contested class identities and offering provocative political commentary. In addition to doing a photo collection of existing graffiti, Chirere re-imagines these pieces of public art by composing a series of poems to accompany each graffiti.

This essentially involved re-configuring and re-imagining through his own poems the messages that graffiti artists in Harare were trying to convey, establishing an emotional and political dialogue between text and street visual.

GOODBYE BREEZE

Goodbye to my car washing job. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday. What a Breeze! What a hard Zimbo hustle. Me I go where my feet go. I go where my nose points: Down South Down Down South where money walks on two feet. I go where gold calls Goodbye water. Goodbye.
