THE NIGHT DUTY
DESIREE MICHELLE NKHAVITHA
The Night Duty is a theatrical drama set over one tense night in a public hospital in urban Malawi. It explores exhaustion, institutional neglect, womanhood and survival within the setting of an overcrowded government hospital during a single night shift. Blending physical theatre, dramatic storytelling and fragmented flashbacks, the work follows a tired nurse, a pregnant young prisoner in labour and a prison warder as their personal histories slowly unfold throughout the night.
The project examines how systems meant to protect human life can also become spaces of emotional violence, silence and abandonment. Through movement, repetition, memory sequences and emotionally charged dialogue, the performance reveals the hidden emotional burdens carried by healthcare workers, vulnerable women and ordinary people navigating broken institutions.
The work is intentionally intimate and minimalistic, relying heavily on the actors’ bodies, emotional tension and atmosphere to communicate what words often fail to express. The Night Duty: Loud Whispers seeks to create an emotionally immersive experience that encourages audiences to reflect on care, dignity, trauma and the quiet resilience of those forced to endure difficult realities.
