THE BURDEN OF THOUGHT

DORPHANAGE
The Burden of Thought is a spoken word poetry project that explores the psychological and emotional terrain of young Africans navigating urban life under conditions of economic precarity, shrinking civic space and structural inequality. Rooted in introspection and social critique, the work traces how private thought spirals are shaped; and often intensified by broader systems of power, including capitalism, democratic erosion, media distortion and social dysfunction.

The piece moves between the intimate and the political: from personal anxieties, family expectations and identity questions to wider reflections on governance, justice and global economic imbalance. In doing so, it positions the individual mind as both witness to and battleground of contemporary reality, where thinking becomes both burden and resistance.
By translating internal mental weight into public artistic expression, The Burden of Thought frames spoken word as a form of claim-making; an act of visibility and civic presence. The project uses poetry to interrogate power while imagining more inclusive, reflective and democratic urban futures.

Dorphanage — NAIROBI, KENYA
Dorphanage is a gifted lyrical virtuoso; a blender of verse, hip hop, theatre, music and improv in his mission to be a truth-teller, a historian of self and society. His spoken word performances travel from the anguish of the personal to the uncertainties of living in a broken world. He opens the door to vulnerability and poignancy so rare in performance spaces and lets the tirades verbalizing the pains of dispossession flow freely; telling the stories of the forgotten, the scarred and the disenfranchised peoples – from the juicy bustle of Meru’s Gakoromone Market to the mad flavours of Eastlands Nairobi and beyond.

He is the 34th Slam Africa champion, a poetry educator, podcast host and a strong proponent for social justice whose work continues to shape conversations within the Kenyan literary, performance and civic landscape. Over the years, he has remained actively involved in the poetry and arts community through performances, workshops, delegations, mentorship, facilitation and cultural advocacy. His performances are marked by emotional honesty, lyrical depth and a strong connection to African oral traditions while embracing contemporary spoken word and musical influences.
