GHETTO GRADING / BREDAH

SEAN MORGAN
Ghetto Grading/Bredah is a multimedia Dancehall and documentary project that examines urban inequality and uneven service delivery across Lilongwe, Malawi. The project has developed into a community-driven artistic intervention that combines music, street interviews, and visual storytelling to portray the everyday realities faced by residents in different parts of the city. Through conversations with vendors, youth, commuters, and local communities, the work documents experiences linked to poor road networks, inadequate sanitation, unreliable water access, insecurity, weak public infrastructure, and challenges within essential services such as hospitals.

Using the term ‘Bredah’ meaning brother, the project tells the story of young people living in the ghetto who speak openly about injustice, unemployment, and neglect despite pursuing education and striving for better lives. The song captures both frustration and resilience, encouraging youths to rise above these challenges, speak against injustice, and remain hopeful for change. By blending documentary footage with Dancehall performance and contrasting urban imagery, the project creates a powerful reflection on citizenship, inequality, and the realities of contemporary urban life.
